Freedom with a Conscience

While Gatchaman Crowds was able to convey its message, the poor direction and marketing propaganda of this series drags down its overall value.

Gatchaman Crowds portrayed the thin line that separates a utopia from a dystopia. The very basis coming from how society perceives and accepts such form of control. In this case, the potential system of GALAX to govern and collate all human information.

It’s not totally far-fetched considering a lot of us now has probably integrated social media applications such as Facebook in our daily lives. All it needs is an intelligent system capable of merging human thoughts into one and relaying it to the rest of humanity.

And to be honest, they did well in portraying that. A unified Japan where the Prime Minister consults GALAX for the opinions and thoughts of others to make a sound judgment is one kind of utopia that is possible with our technology. And to think that the very use of GALAX few episodes ago could lead to the same disaster of creating chaos and anarchy.

The concept of everyone becoming heroes and doing whatever they want backed up with the conscience that GALAX provides is perhaps one of the greatest good that humanity can achieve.

For instance, let’s say I wanted to steal and consulted GALAX about it. We all know that stealing is bad but people capable of understanding my reasons for it would probably sympathize and encourage such act. GALAX gathers information and opinion of others and from there, a sound judgment could be made. It’s still up to me to ignore GALAX’s advice and proceed with my plan but there’s where the kicker is. Human beings are ALWAYS governed by their conscience. Will the good coming from the decision “to steal” outweigh the good coming from “not stealing”?

It’s really good. The ideal situation presented in this series is really thought-provoking and delicious but as I mentioned, it got dragged down by a lot of things.

The titular Gatchaman potentially did nothing for this series other than being a fictitious group that protects the world from extra-terrestrial threats. And what threats were there aside from Katze? The MESS. And that MESS issue was resolved in just 2-3 episodes. After that, they simply presented GALAX and the speculah on who the enemy is. And it really blew up like that.

It would’ve been better if they gave this series a different title. One that probably made more sense rather than riding on the Gatchaman flagship and stoking the ire of those who valued the Gatchaman franchise.

Then there’s the fucked up plot. The inconsistency of the characters that’s not related to Hajime is in shambles. Take OD for instance. He’s supposed to be the almighty plot device meant to kick Katze’s ass but if he’s so powerful, why wasn’t he able to defeat him IN THE FIRST PLACE? Like, basing on his backstory, a couple of centuries ago when he first encountered him after Katze destroyed his homeworld? Did he have to level up for 3 centuries in order to get his ass handed back to him in the end?

And if Katze had a note, didn’t that mean that he can spy on the G-members and know whatever they plans were? If I recall correctly, Pai said that all members of the Gatchaman are able to see whatever is written in the note. So what the fuck. They’ve been letting themselves be one-upped by Katze right from the start? For 3 fucking centuries?

And how was Hajime able to absord Katze? Don’t tell me he just decided to stay in her boobs?

But whatever. Despite its faults, this series was still enjoyable. It had a good soundtrack, the OP and ED songs were enjoyable, the seiyuu are good especially the rookies (Maaya Uchida, Ohsaka Ryota), the visuals are definitely eye-candy and the ideal presented is good (on paper).

Well, if I ignore the messy execution, and the rather confusingly rushed sequence of events towards the end, I’d say this wasn’t too bad. In a way, it is advocating a form of governance that’s pretty close to anarchy in some sense :p.

Anarchy presented neatly to appeal to some of the viewers. The presentation is good but the delivery is a totally different matter. By the way, do you have any recommendations for the next season?

    Some I’ll probably watch:
    – Kyousougiga (loved the ONAs, hope these will be great with more episodes and more time in each episode)
    – Infinite Stratos2 (at least two more girls to the group, and more battles … etc)
    – Kyoukai no Kanata (KyoAni doing fantasy again? Looks fancy :p)
    – Nagi no Asukara (This could be fantastic or horrible with Mari Okada doing the writing :p)
    – Kill La Kill (I’ve gotten lots of recommendations for this one, though having “Kill” in the title doesn’t appeal to me :p. The PVs do look good…)
    – Yuusha ni Narenakatta (I’ve been looking forward to this one ever since I saw a preview of the manga. I don’t think it will be as good as Hataraku Mousama, but it should be good for some laughs at least)
    – Yozakura Quartet Hana no Uta (Never watched the previous Yozakura Quartet anime, and since this is a reboot of sorts, I thought it would be interesting to find out what this is about. Kind of like my “excuse” to watch Rozen Maiden :p)
    – Unbreakable Machine-Doll (Enjoyed the manga. I’m not so sure about the art style of this anime, but it should be watch-able at least)
    – Tokyo Ravens (Enjoyed the manga. The PV looks good. Hope it will be fun)
    – Non Non Biyori (Slice of life comedy in the countryside. Sounds like “fun” :p.)
    – Samurai Flamenco (I think this might be the biggest budget Manglobe production ever yet? :p One of the few anime original stories this season. Masked hero stuff. Hope it will be interesting)

Others I’m curious about (will try the first episode):
    – Coppelion (The PVs look interesting, but the premise doesn’t sound compelling for me ^^;.)
    – Outbreak Company (story doesn’t sound very compelling for me, but I’m willing to give it a try)
    – Golden Time (I somehow didn’t like the manga, but I want to give this romcom another try)
    – Log Horizon (yet another fantasy game fantasy story :p. Will see if this is any good)
    – Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai (fan service anime of the season? ^^; )
    – Gingitsune (I’ve never read the manga, but this looks like it could be interesting)
    – Arpeggio of Blue Steel Ars Nova (not so sure about the premise, but might have potential I think?)
    – Yowamushi Pedal (probably the only sports anime I’ll try this season, not that I ever take much note of sports anime :p. It does look like it has potential)
    – Noucome (CRPG scenario played out in real life? ^^; Not really compelling, but well, I’ll give it a try :p)
    – Galilei Donna (feels kind of cheap using a famous name with some girls just to get attention ^^;, but I’m curious enough to see what this is really about)
    – Koroshiya-san (action comedy. Not really my thing, but if it doesn’t annoy me too much it could be amusing I guess?)

    Short episode animes I’ll watch:
    – Super Seisyun Brothers (I don’t expect much out of this one, but should be amusing enough)
    – Miss Monochrome (premise definitely isn’t compelling, but it’s short and hopefully won’t be too bad :p)

    Waiting on reviews:
    – Gundam Build Fighters (Gundam isn’t really my thing, though this doesn’t seem to be the typical Gundam series)
    – Strike the Blood (Been interested in this one, but I don’t know anything about this series. This scriptwriter’s track record is a mixed bag at best, so I’m wary … ^^;)
    – Pupa (it’s horror, but it’s Ibuki Kido T_T. Usually, I’d avoid this stuff at all cost, but… :p)

Decided to skip (might change my mind if I get recommendations):
    – Magi2 (I liked the first season for the most part, but somehow I’m not compelled to watch more of this)
    – Little Busters Refrain (First season wasn’t bad, but I think I’ve had enough :p)
    – others…

    Those I’ve watched so far:
Coppelion ep1: Looks better than I expected, but I’m worried that the art/colours might give me headaches and eye problems ^^; (same studio that produced “K” and same weird colours :p).
Kyoukai no Kanata ep1: Feels a bit more dark than the usual KyoAni stuff, but the cliché comedy is still there. Good start for the most part, though I wouldn’t call it outstanding.
Kyousougiga ep0: The first ONA/OVA with some polish basically. So there’s no need to watch any of the previous ONAs before watching this season I guess, since they seem to intend to broadcast the same material on TV.
Kill la Kill ep1: This seem to live up to the hype so far (for me). It does live up to the “kill” in the title as well ^^;. Not exactly the kind of anime I usually go for, but I think I’ll end up watching this to the end. This looks good.
IS2 ep1: Feels like a prologue. Reintroducing most of the characters. Combined a few side stories from the novel. I suppose the real deal starts in episode two. Quality looks better than the first season overall.
Golden Time ep1: Looks better than I expected, but the characters seem to have potential to be real frustrating/annoying. Will see what the second episode brings, but I won’t be surprised if I drop this later :p.

Nagi no Asukara ep1: Mari Okada’s teen angst drama in a fantasy world is still a teen angst drama :p. Not sure if I’ll continue this one, this could end up being frustrating and annoying to watch XD.

I sincerely appreciate the suggestions. I haven’t watched much of the new season episodes since I’m catching up with the previous ones.

    COMPLETED:

    * Servant x Service – great ending, hope there’s a second season
    * Rozen Maiden – did a long writeup for this
    * Kinmoza – the series was decent but the 1st episode set the expectations too high and it gradually declined
** Endymion no Kiseki – It was a surprisingly good To Aru movie.

    PENDING:

    * Symphogear – WHERE THE FUCK COMMIE?!
    * Monogatari series – just watched ep 11
    * Madoka Movie 1 and 2 –

Other than work-related stuff, I’m trying to reach Platinum in League of Legends before October ends so I barely have time checking out the new episodes. I’ll probably convert them later and watch them as I head to work.

Servant x Service: Yeah, I hope for a second season as well.
Kinmoza: Agreed. It gradually declined for the most part.

Symphogear G and Commie: Supposedly, the translator prioritised playing LoL over translating this for a week :p. It’s translated now, but it seems like the timer gave up (left a message saying “DROPPED FOR KILL LA KILL” ^^; ). I’ve watched the sub by “anonymous”, it’s not too bad :p.

Outbreak Company ep1: This turned out better than I expected (well, I had low expectations :p). Nice art and animation. Decent execution. Comedy is pretty good. Protagonist keep reminding me of Issei from DxD for some reason ^^;, though he is different. IMHO they seem to have kept a level of respect for all the characters despite the subject matter ^^;.

Strike the Blood ep1: Ended up trying this despite my misgivings. Annoyingly (for me), the weird colours that were so often seen in Silver Link animes are back ^^;. Quality feels lower than most recent Silver Link animes :p. Fast pacing. The portrayals didn’t impress me. Some say this is two cour (but I’ve seen it listed as one cour as well). It’s not horrible, but I find it mediocre at best. I’ll probably try one more episode to see where it goes next, but chances are I’ll drop this.

Yuusha ni Narenakatta (Yuushibu) ep1: Wish they didn’t use so much fan service :(. Typical comedy. Everyone seem to compare this with Hataraku Maou-sama, but I think it’s more comparable with “Working”, but in a magical fantasy world :p.

Log Horizon ep1: I liked this better than I thought I would. Many compare it with SAO, but I find it having more similarities with other fantasy adventure series. This should be fun I think, gives a bit of a nostalgic feel.

Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai (Sekatsuyo) ep1: Messy storytelling, and rather awkward presentation. I could tell that the story has potential, but the execution makes it not compelling. Maybe it’s partly due to them rushing to get the prologue story told or something. Character portrayal doesn’t feel compelling either (very little depth). Seems like the protagonist is going to be screaming in pain regularly on this show (not really my thing ^^;). I’ll try one more episode, but there’s a high chance of me dropping this.

Gingitsune ep1: Slice of life stuff. Episodic. Kiddy lesson of week kind of deal. This episode felt more than a bit rushed. Overall this looks decent, but not the most interesting :p. I’ll probably watch this as long as I don’t get too bored or too annoyed by the protagonist ^^;.

Yozakura Quartet Hana no Uta ep1: Looks really fun. They really follow the “show, don’t tell” principle :p. Slice of life feel, but lots of fancy action. There’s a decent plot too ;), and it’s not hard to follow, even without narration. Hope it will continue to be interesting.

Gundam Build Fighters ep1: Turns out better than I expected. It’s all about Gunpla :p, but I kind of like it so far. I suppose I might get bored of it at some point.

Yowamushi Pedal ep1: Not the best pacing (there were parts that bore me for a few moments, parts that felt repetitive, and parts that felt like it needed better transitions ^^;), but overall this was pretty good. Likeable characters. Amusing comedy (though a tiny bit more subtle than most anime). Pretty good first episode, though I can imagine me getting bored of this later :p.

Ars Nova ep1: Nice sci-fi, but I was bored for most of this introductory episode ^^;. Not the most original plot :p. Warships with female avatars ^^;. Not my thing to be honest, but I’ll probably try another episode to see where this goes next.

Non Non Biyori ep1: The countryside slice of life comedy anime begins :p. I’ve read the manga, so I have an idea of what to expect ^^;. Slow idyllic countryside life with a group of girls. Slower paced than most comedies :p. Really relaxing, but some might consider it boring I guess ;). Love the music.

Just downloaded GBF. Will watch it on my way to work.

Just watched Strike the Blood and while I love Risa Taneda landing on a lead role for this show, for some reason, it felt boring. Don’t know if i’ll continue watching this.

Also watched Coppelion. The setup was slow but the post-apocalyptic setting is catchy. And knowng that Angela did the ending song, this series may probably end in tragedy. Iirc, most series where Angel sang an op/ed usually ends in despair =/

Yeah, Strike the Blood doesn’t seem too compelling.

So Coppelion is predicted to have a tragic ending huh T_T? Well, I can see that happening as well. Probably won’t stop me from watching for now, but I’ll have to watch the second episode before I decide if I really want to continue watching to the end.

Unbreakable Machine-Doll ep1: This anime has too many alternate titles (and none of them short ones ^^;). Kikou Shoujo wa Kizutsukanai, Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai, Machine Girl wa Kizutsukanai :p. Art style takes a bit of getting used to, but overall this looks good enough. Pacing is fast, but seem to work for the most part. Voices are very familiar. For those of us who watch TWGOK last season, the protagonist will sound too familiar XD. I didn’t have high expectations after seeing the PVs, but this turned out okay I think.

I’ve been eyeing Machine-Doll for quite some time now. I’ve read the manga and while it falls along the lines of cliche, I still find it (manga) enjoyable. Oh and if i’m not mistaken, the leads for this series are both leads in Baka to Test =/

Yeah, it’s mostly cliché stuff and the characters are often frustratingly stubborn :p, but the manga is enjoyable. IMO, it has good art, good pacing/storytelling (which I find to be rare for adaptations from novels), good comedy, and good action. For this anime, I think the action will likely be the focus.

Yeah, you are right, they both voiced the leads in BakaTest. I didn’t watch BakaTest though, so I have no idea what they sound like there. Machine-Doll sounds to me like Keima somehow entered the Senran Kagura game world. Made Asuka fall in love with him. Both ended up travelling into another game and Keima is now trying to find his way out with Asuka supporting him XD. Kidding :p.

BakaTest? Well, I think about it :p.

Tokyo Ravens ep1: Art isn’t too bad, but the 3D stuff ^^;, gah. OP gives away too much of the story. Slower paced than I expected in some parts and faster paced than I expected in others. Storytelling could be better, but the way this is presented seem similar to the manga (and I assume the novel would have been the same). Voices are not bad, but they sound too familiar, or rather too similar to the voices the seiyuus used in other anime :p. Having read the manga, I know what is coming next ^^;. So far I’m not really impressed (though my opinion is probably coloured by my having read the manga :p), but I think it’s not too bad overall. Hopefully they will do a decent job in the second episode where the story gets more interesting.

Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga Gakuen Love Comedy wo Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru ep1: Known also as Noucome ^^;. This look and sounds pretty bad :p. The premise is bad enough, but the execution is worst IMHO XD. I find the way it is presented really annoying (specially the background music and sound effects). The jokes drag out way too long (the punchline doesn’t seem to have much effect as a result). The story is arbitrary, but I don’t think it matters much for this kind of story. I’m not going to watch any more of this :p. I’ll probably take your recommendation and marathon BakaTest at some point instead ;).
