The Original Underdog

Before Kumagawa became well-received in the Medaka-verse, there was a guy known as Hitoyoshi Zenkichi

While both are underdogs, the difference between Zenkichi and Kumagawa is the strength of their will, differentiated by their intention, or rather, drive to win and surpass any challenge. As for Zenkichi’s case, he’s the original underdog of the series, personified by his character of a normal human struggling though his life while being surrounded by talented geniuses and out-of-this-world monsters.

And to be honest, even after all this time, being reminded of how paranoid Zenkichi is brings back a lot of memories when I first started reading the series. He’s one of the characters that I fully relate myself with, especially after he mentioned his paranoia. Be it his sense of inferiority or his pessimism, it was then that I realized how it must’ve been truly difficult for him to carry everyone. It’s not that he oversees what the specials and abnormals do but he cleans the mess that they make as they rampage through their path to glory and for a normal to handle such a daunting task, you have to give props to Zenkichi and his understanding to his colleagues.

As with Takachiho, Munakata received a good amount of backstory and I’m quite sympathetic with how hard it must’ve been for him to choose his way of living. Well, I still think his abnormality isn’t that special (immense killing intent?) but I liked his decision to prevent himself of killing by showing others away. Well, if I know that I am mentally unstable, I would’ve probably done the same thing.

Another great episode. Munakata’s plight does ring true. Next episode should get even more interesting, I suppose it might even be a two episode arc? I’m starting to wonder how much of the manga this season will really cover…

The next episodes may even be a couple of arcs spanning until Kumagawa finally arrives. To be honest, I would prefer the series to end showing the carnage that he left.
