Because we beat sense to each other

I think Black Rock Shooter is a glorified version of Ben-To. In that anime, people fight each other since they follow the impulses of their stomach. In BRS, they fight each other because of the F word (FRIENDSHIP!!).

So in the end, what WAS BRS’ struggle?

Judging from how things go, the cycle of battle in BRS is quite repetitive.

The first indications that a battle is to start would be conflict. There must be something happening between multiple parties. Specifically, a clash of ideals and beliefs. Taking Chariot & Dead Master vs BRS, Kagari wants to “own” Yomi who is conflicted regarding whose side she is to take. Matou simply wants to free Yomi from Kagari. From such a simple setup, their otherworld avatars now have a reason to kick each other’s asses.

When their ideals clash, as represented by their avatars, whoever avatar that “dies” will have to resign their argument irl. This will put a resolution to the current issue and may lead to a calmer personality or perhaps, a memory wipe. In Yu’s case, she just had to suck it up and face her reality that she avoided for a long time.

After some time, the otherword avatar that “dies” is recreated with a new personality, depending on the new emotion gained by the real-life counterpart after her “defeat” in their argument.

So what was this anime about? I guess I was right in speculating that this entire fiasco was brought about by Matou’s denial of herself and “pain” in general. I mean, they (otherworld avatars) were simply living their lives, minding their own business, until Matou decides to step in, causing BRS to go crazy. In the end, she had to embrace the pains that she rejected in order to accept who she really is and free BRS from her batshit mode.

Looking back, this series simply stretched out the idea presented in the OVA but did it with proper direction, consistent animation, and an amazing seiyuu cast. Now that this is over, I wonder when the PSP game will get an anime adaptation or even the manga?

lol, what? Ben-To XD? Not bad ending. Though I am still confused about time. Given that Saya was a high school student when she first met Yuu, and when we first meet her she is a student counsellor in a junior high school. How long has this been going on? If BRS has been killing since before Yuu first switched with Strength, Matou have been denying herself since who knows when? How old were they when BRS started to go on a killing spree? Elementary school? Earlier than that? Or is my sense of time thrown off completely due to Saya XD…

In Saya’s flashback, she looks like the same age with Yu but I guess she’s way older than that. For all we know, there may even be a 4-5 year difference and may even treat Saya’s job as counselor to be her first after university.

As for BRS and STR, I guess the time they crossed paths happened when they first became friends. After all, it was Matou who was capable of seeing Yu before so that might be it

    Purely speculah though =|

Yeah, we can only speculate. When I realised the potential time difference, it made me wonder if the world they live in was even “real”, specially given how Yuu/Strength was portrayed. Given that Yuu didn’t recognise Matou, I assumed that Matou had only met Strength as “Yuu”. As for Saya’s flashback, well, Yuu’s appearance there was the confusing part I guess. It’s as if she had not age since then.
