First Impressions: Mouretsu Pirates

Indulge me of my ignorance but this anime reminds me of Mawaru Penguindrum. I don’t know if it’s because of the OP/ED song or even the art design but it really does strike a resemblance only this is a thousand times better.

Sounds legit

For a first episode, I think this anime is downright crazy. For starters, we have a pirate captain die of food poisoning leaving his daughter to be the successor. Now from Ririka’s exchange with Misa, this man seem to be skilled enough back in the day and for him to die, not in battle but with food poisoning is definitely fucked up. Well, if this was a serious kind of anime then I’d probably decided to drop this from that point on but the vibes I get say differently.

Facepalm

They also did a good job ridding away of most of the back story by presenting a simple, yet easy to understand narrative at the start and the almighty power of google to provide the answers that our protagonist is looking for.

Yes, yes, if there's something you don't understand, better ask google about it.

So yeah, by the end of the episode, there’s a gunfight and everyone seem to be after Marika for God knows what and I really liked it. It was totally crazy yet awesome especially with how this anime seem to emphasize chicks (wearing glasses) with big guns.

Overall, I think i’ll be sticking with this anime. The premise is good, the animation is decent, we have a lot of girls with guns, the characters have either bold personalities or are downright crazies, and the seiyuu cast is quite strong, with a rookie(?) seiyuu (Mikako Komatsu) taking on the role of our protagonist, Marika. Now this is the first time that I’d get to notice her voice acting despite her roles from the past but I have to say that there’s a warm yet energetic feel to it. Well, she’s yet to make an impression but i’ll take this opportunity to check her out in how she carries the role.

This was surprising fun, though I find the characters not that compelling (maybe I’ve been spoilt by other anime :p). The story seems okay, animation looks good. Didn’t think about picking this up before I watch this first episode, but I think I might like it.

The title sounds stupid enough to take seriously but seeing how this anime may turn out to be good, clean fun, not to mention, looking at another prospective seiyuu rookie, I decided to give this anime a shot.

Then again, I guess since we seem to be well-oriented with anime, we seem to be more picky with our preferences. It is refreshing to have one anime stand out and bash our expectations, I like it more that way as far as new season anime is concerned 😀

Seiyuu line-up for Mo-pai is AWSM SH**. I’m hopping on board this show just for it. And Komatsu Mikako is already becoming famous just for her off screen antics alone from taking creepy photographs of her friends (e.g. Omigawa Chiaki’s legs) to getting her ass grabbed twice by none other than Itou Shizuka on live TV. She’s definitely one to watch…of course for her potential in voice acting as a main character too. 😀

First episode hooked my attention by story alone which is a good sign, and I plan on keeping it on my regular watch list…unless it terribly sucks in the long run which even the cast can’t justify its watchability. I won’t expect too much but I still hope it wouldn’t turn out that way since it’ll most likely be the only show I can watch during this season. I haven’t even finished the Anime I started in past seasons. @_@

goddamn why do you always invite me with perverted seiyuu lives!… Now I’m more eager to watch over her career as a seiyuu XD

I think you need to marathon your anime pile one of these days then again, work must’ve been eating you up =|

Because exposing the shady activities of seiyuu is what I love doing best! See, like this photo of Hanazawa Kana staring creepily at Komatsu’s zettai ryouiki – http://twitpic.com/7rxget/full (I’m loving the fact that Hanazawa is becoming more and more perverted as the days go by XD). Btw, Omigawa took that photo ahaha~

Anyway, I have a feeling Komatsu will blossom to be one of the more recognizable names in the future. I have faith in the sound director, Aketagawa Jin, to launch her career. He has a habit of picking huge names for the supporting cast and giving the protagonist role to a rookie seiyuu, perhaps as a means of honing his/her skills through the hard but good way. It sure did wonders for people like Kayano Ai in AnoHana. 🙂

Yeah, I have a junkyard pile of work on top of me at the moment. I haven’t even finished Fate/Zero yet, which pretty much speaks that I can’t even set aside time for such an epic show. Still, I’ll try to squeeze in the things I really want to watch. Going weeks without even a single episode of Anime is madness. X__X

    @Keiri

I could imagine her drool trailing off on to where she stares XD

I recall you fangirling over Aketagawa Jin way back (was that in Index or Arakawa?) seeing how he is such a strict sound director that delivers quality goods. I guess i’m still naive to delve deeper into an anime’s constitution, never going beyond seiyuu, but with your intel, I’m guessing this anime may turn out to be Komatsu’s big break (since I really never watched Heroman where she also did a major role)

i’m guessing you still have some form of “support” to keep you going despite your crazy sched (music or perhaps encouragement from friends or family or probably seiyuu legs) hope you can find the time to sit back and relax keiri >_<

I may give this a chance in the future, but I’ll use your experience for now in order to understand if it’s worth it…
