Drawing Comparisons: Knight of Honor and Gandalfr

Waiting in anticipation for the final season of Zero no Tsukaima, I find myself drawing similarities between Hiraga Saito’s ability as Gandalfr and Fate/Zero’s Berserker’s Knight of Honor.

Looking bluntly at Hiraga Saito, I always thought that his abilities sucked. Sure, he was able to achieve sword mastery and has gained magic resistance and the capability to go against difficult magicians and monsters alike but let’s face it, the way Zero no Tsukaima presents this fact is quite dull.

Let’s take for instance, Saito’s last stand in Zero no Tsukaima: Futatsuki no Kishi. To be honest, I was moved to tears when Saito decided to sacrifice himself, unleashing the potential of his Gandalfr powers to buy time for his allies’ escape. A few years later, the epicness of that scene may have been overshadowed by the potential batshit rampage of Berserker’s Knight of Honor. I mean, if Saito was able to execute deft movements, stealing the enemies weapons and using it against them, instead of rushing recklessly in the battlefield, things may have been different. My impression on that scene may have leveled up a hundredfold.

Then again, Saito will always be Saito and Berserker, still badass in that black chunk of armor. But in all honesty, I am hoping that in this final season of Zero no Tsukaima, things would level up a bit; From the completion of the story to the battles. I do hope that the years I waited for this finale would be all worth it.
