Because Fetishes are SEXY

From MyAnimeList:

Haimura Kiri is a seemingly ordinary boy with one slight problem: he is obsessed with cutting other people’s hair. One day he meets Mushiyanokouji Iwai, the “Hair Queen” who cannot cut her hair because of an inherited curse. Kiri finds out that his scissor, “Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge” is the only thing that can cut them. But little did he know that their meeting sparked the start of an old murder game to kill the “Hair Queen” using the cursed killing tools, the “Killing Goods.” Can Kiri protect Iwai from the Killing Goods Owners? Let the game begin!

The premise is stupid. That’s what I thought until I read the first few pages of this manga. The next thing I know, I ran past the 13 currently translated chapters of Dansai Bunri. So what made this manga a good read?

No, it’s not the fact that he’s holding her while she’s naked… It’s the fact that he’s holding her long hair that he madly wants to cut.

From what I understand so far, the world of Dansai Bunri revolves around the Hair Queen whose hair can’t be cut. Lore says that whoever “kills” her may have a wish granted but the only way to do so is to use a “Killing Good”: Tools used by previous murderers of such scale. On Kiri’s case, his great… something of a grandfather is a mass murderer who killed 200 people that fled to Japan using the scissors he wield which they named “Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge”. “Killing Goods” posses their chosen wielder and drives them to madness until they could no longer bear it and have their urge explode, causing them to actually kill someone. In Kiri’s case, he’s fond of hair and had the urge to cut people’s hair.

One way to prevent these individuals to ever transforming into crazed psychopaths is to have an “Instead” which are individuals who act as an outlet of their urges (… that sounds like a line from a perverted doujin). For Kiri, he’s paired with Iwai whose hair grows back at midnight giving him the chance of a lifetime to “murder” someone’s hair over and over.

Of course, not limited to these guys, there are other “Killing Goods” wielders who are after Iwai’s “life”. The one thing I noticed though is that their paired “Insteads”, who are subject to their torture, have personalities contradicting their own.

The brains and the brawn

The blind and the deaf

Allies...

of Justice

The Sadist

The Masochist

And things get more erotic as you read along. But honestly, perversion aside, there are a lot of key concepts worth noting for this manga. For instance, the concept of “Murder” which have been heavily implied in this series. While there are some of the wielders who actually killed people, the concept of “killing” the hair queen is still vague. Is this something to be interpreted literally or does this talk about Kiri using “Crime Edge” to cut her hair permanently, to the point that it won’t grow back.

Running so far with 13 translated chapters, “Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge” is a good read; With an interesting premise, good character designs, and a tingle for one’s erotic craving.
