HanaIro ep 4: Birds of the same feather

So Minko likes Tohru while Tohru likes Yuina? While I do like this episode, reminding me of “school life” which is a common staple in slice-of-life anime, I’m quite surprised with how they managed to tackle in one episode Minko and Tohru’s personalities as well as introducing the new character, Yuina. Despite seeing them in a different light, I still cannot bring myself to like Minko and Tohru. I understand that Tohru is hardworking but considerate? Only a masochist (Minko) would think like that! Tohru may be considerate when it comes to the customers but I doubt he’s considerate when it comes to his peers. His way of teasing Ohana and lecturing Minko may be a distinct personality unique only to him in this anime but I still don’t like how Minko sugarcoats his attitude.

Focusing back to Minko, I still can’t understand why she’s still pissed off with Ohana. I thought that they will get on better terms ever since episode 3 but it seems that nothing has changed. I don’t like to think that this has anything to do with how Ohana made a failure of an impression in the first episode or how Ohana keeps on butting in. For all we know, Minko may even be jealous of Ohana, probably due to the fact that ever since she came, she’s been the spotlight for attention. Even Tohru recognized her cooking skills.

If Minko (masochist) likes strict guys, could it be that Tohru loves dojikko? Or perhaps tsundere? Since Yuina admits that she’d enjoy anything as long as it’s fun, I have a feeling that she’s only playing with Tohru or perhaps, she sincerely hopes to become the manager of the rivaling inn for the heck of it. It’s really hard to distinguish the character behind those sweet words… Dammit! what’s wrong with kind characters for this season?! It’s as if all of them had ulterior motives! (I’m assuming they had one btw). Oh and it seems that Keiri had her predictions right when it comes to Yuina… I guess this is the power of a SPHERE fan?… Or perhaps, her penchant for legs triggered her precognition (just kidding).

Lol..interesting doubt on Minko being a masochist. But Yuina just gave me a very good first impression that I just can’t imagine her being a bad girl. And I think she may not like Tooru at all, they’re probably just good friends. Hopefully after all this triangle love drama is done, Minko will be on better terms with Ohana.

They may be good friends but the fact that Minko seem to misunderstood would probably lead to a shitstorm next episode. As for Yuina, it’s top early to say. The fact that she faked her Kansai accent makes me doubt her reasons but well, she seems to be a genuinely happy-go-lucky character who’s in it for fun so meh.

*guess I just got some Mayuri overdose of suspicion* orz

Yuina x Tohru is highly unlikely in my opinion (for some weird reason, perhaps my intuition). I’d guess that it will end up with Minko misunderstanding the whole situation, and Ohana later helping to correct things.

    The odd thing here is, while this arc is obviously designed to get Minko and Ohana to become friends (or at least, closer to each other), I’m having a really tough time imagining how in the world this drama-heavy situation will lead up to them being friends… =.=;;

This is actually a good device here in order for Ohana to increase Minko’s ‘affection points’.

Worst case scenario would be, Yuina IS dating Tohru and Ohana references her Kou-chan (which she left in Tokyo) to reason out with Minko. From a perspective regarding the flow of boy x girl relationship, Ohana is admired by Kou as Tohru is admired by Minko. Brutally saying it, both Kou and Minko have offered a one-sided love… er… I don’t think Minko would be happy when Ohana would explain such a thing… orz

His way of teasing Ohana and lecturing Minko may be a distinct personality unique only to him in this anime but I still don’t like how Minko sugarcoats his attitude.

Perhaps Tohru’s strictness and harshness could be seen as his way of showing tough love to his peers, particularly towards people who are in training like Minko and Ohana? I suppose if we take Minko’s crush out of the equation, she’s probably the type of person who believes that a Spartan or military style of training helps them to learn better. That could be seen as Tohru’s way of being considerate of the trainees in making sure they would always be on their toes so that they won’t disappoint the owner or cause problems for their colleagues.

Then again, that’s limited to work. Outside of work, I find Tohru to be an insensitive jerk though especially the way he teases and insults Ohana, saying things like “You couldn’t make any friends, could you? Given how bad you are at reading other people’s mood.” (Pft… Look who’s talking, you hypocrite). He probably doesn’t mean anything bad behind his teasing and it could even be his way of showing his fondness for Ohana (Yeah, maybe it’s better than being treated as though you don’t exist) but honestly, there’s a fine line between having fun with someone and just being mean and nasty. Every individual has their own tolerance level when it comes to getting teased but people can only handle so much before they find it irritating. It’s okay if Tohru teases Ohana every now and then but I wish he would lay off insulting her every single time they meet. That’s just plain annoying to watch. =_=

On another note, I’d like them to touch on Minko’s reasons for having a crush on Tohru. He has yet to show a genuinely kind side to his personality outside of work so some history exploring would be good. Romance without proper justification feels so…empty.

For all we know, Minko may even be jealous of Ohana, probably due to the fact that ever since she came, she’s been the spotlight for attention. Even Tohru recognized her cooking skills.

Hmm… This seems likely. We need to see more of Minko’s background if we are to understand her personality as well as how she thinks. Maybe she saw some of the qualities in Ohana that she wishes she had and it led to her feeling jealous towards Ohana. Guess some people are like that, especially if they’re the type who harbor an inferiority complex and are prone to feeling insecure whenever someone else eclipses them, all the more if that person is a newbie at their work place. It’s even worse when that other person keeps butting into your life, and you have to put up with them hanging around you all the time, even if that person shows good intentions towards you. Who knows, even them showing good will towards you can be wrongly interpreted as a sign of them having pity on you. For someone with a lot of pride like Minko, she may find it disrespectful. On the other hand, maybe Minko is just a really grouchy girl. :p

Oh and it seems that Keiri had her predictions right when it comes to Yuina… I guess this is the power of a SPHERE fan?… Or perhaps, her penchant for legs triggered her precognition (just kidding).

    OI!! XDDDD

How come Tomacchan’s legs are part of it??? XD

Anyway, about Yuina… I agree there’s still too little screentime of her to allow us to make a tangible assessment about her character but regardless, I’m not ruling out the possibility of her being multifaceted yet. Based on her official profile, Yuina is described as “a girl who sometimes says and does harsh things but she’s not a bad person and she doesn’t mean any malice behind her actions”. Judging from that, she probably just does them because it’s fun to her although her actions can still unintentionally hurt others.

Btw I’ll LMAO if Yuina and Tohru turn out to be relatives or something and Minko going all emo is nothing but a misunderstanding with regards to that. Here’s hoping not. I want some real dorama for once, not just another misunderstanding. Well, if Yuina and Tohru are close friends, Minko’s jealousy is still justifiable but please, anything BUT relatives. XD

so Omigawa has potential to level up among the ranks of seiyuu but she needs to work on her acting, correct?

Yep, although she’s still failing at that fundamental aspect of being a seiyuu. This episode was a clear reminder of that. @__@

Surprisingly, most male seiyuu that I look up to would almost use the same voice but covers it up with darn good acting such as Takahiro Sakurai, Wakamoto Norio, kazuya Nakai. I guess the merits of a good seiyuu would be the capability to showcase different voices and/or good acting.

Those are excellent examples there. Even though their voices are oh so recognizable because of how they sound, they still entertain us with the versatility in their acting. Usually I don’t pay too much mind to whether someone is capable of using a huge range/variety in their voice spectrum or not. As long as s/he can act well in engaging our attention and earning our respect, s/he is a good seiyuu. d(^^)

but honestly, there’s a fine line between having fun with someone and just being mean and nasty

This exactly. Maybe because I’m experiencing similar crap like this at work that I hate Tohru’s guts. Don’t get me wrong though. Harsh critique during work is fine since it tends to be constructive but anything non-work related can turn to annoying. Though, if anything, just to cut Tohru some slack, he does a fine job running his mouth to lecture people during work and off-work. At least he doesn’t get things mixed up

Romance without proper justification feels so…empty.

I’ll say it again, SHE’S A MASOCHIST XD

We need to see more of Minko’s background if we are to understand her personality as well as how she thinks.

A flashback may be needed to explain all these things next episode especially concerning how long she’s been working in her field. It would make sense to be jealous of Ohana’s talents if she’s working for years now yet would still make little to no progress while Ohana showed off her cooking skills right off the bat.

“a girl who sometimes says and does harsh things but she’s not a bad person and she doesn’t mean any malice behind her actions”

heh… people like that can get annoying and get away with it thanks to kewtness but lol, the idea of them being relatives never occurred to me and it would be an odd way to get Minko worked up for that. But since I don’t like Minko and Tohru, why not have each of them suffer a one-sided love?

    Jiroumaru x Yuina < Tohru < Minko

*iirc, Yuina did mention something positive about Jirou in this episode right?
