I love listening to character singles despite the rarity of the songs being translated however, there are some series where i tend to turn a blind eye on when they went out and released some of their own (i.e. Zero no Tsukaima series). oddly enough, despite being my seasonal favorite, i did the same with umineko’s 1st release of chara singles whose songs were sang by Jessica and Maria. I also did the same with beato’s and george not until yesterday. with bumming my ass and playing “a children’s card game” in my PSP, i got curious whenever i read beato’s name over nipponsei’s rss feed. so out of that, i decided to finally check things out, expecting that beato’s song must be filled with insanity, her annoying laughter and expecting myself to be pissed while giggling over the song…
Really, i should take my own advice and not take a look on things under these impressions (lenses).
Be warned though, that this will be a VERY HYPOCRITICAL post. why you ask? well for starters, i suck at naming anything related to music making music reviews like this definitely not my forte but i just had the urge to make this one happen. so my apologies to anyone who reads this.
with that out of the way, let’s start with the obvious reason why i got hooked with the entire series
Before i introduce the song, what caught my attention was how this CD cover resembled one of Rozen Maiden’s OST covers. she looks very much like Shinku right now
by Sayaka Ohara
the first 7 seconds made me think this would be some acoustic music but all my naivety was blown away when it turned rock backed up with sweet piano and violin (the very instrument i liked in most, if not all, Rozen Maiden songs).
basing on the lyrics, this is a fitting image of her especially during the 3rd game of the series (Banquet of the Golden Witch) where her “tsun-dere” operation foiled the positive impression on her though i wonder, i have a naive way of thinking that good character singles such as this one represents the character regardless of their attitude in the anime. for me, songs like these are internal voices that reside within characters and i believe this can be proven in the lyrics of the song despite her annoying smirks and evil laughter. basing on the current episodes of umineko, im thinking that beato was once like maria who walked down the path of a good witch but somewhere along the way, they were both lost and became the true evil witches that they are and i guess that the reason why beato acts up before battler is probably because of him questioning what she has been doing, albeit indirectly, all these years. beato have become a cruel witch but she didn’t start off evil. basing on the line, “If you have love, magic can be seen” i think this line isn’t intended for battler but for beato. the magic she possess now and how she uses it contradicts that very line, the very foundation of her existence as a witch. in this respect, she is denied by battler and in her pride, she fights back to prove her existence. that all she has been doing is not meaningless, even if she has tread on a path of destruction and produced sorrow with her magic.
well, good thing i easily found a translation for Beato’s Chain making my earlier speculations upon hearing the song somewhat identical with the translation. sadly, there’s no english translations for jessica, maria and george making the next post about them pure speculations as to what they mean. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
AI NO SENGEN
by Kenichi Suzumura
correct me if im wrong but the title translates to “Proclamation of Love” that aside, this song made an impression that all chara singles of umineko won’t be what they seem and true enough, it did. well oddly, i felt george has become hysterical in this song. extreme love sickness perhaps? whatever! the music was somewhat suave. i kinda find the music a contradiction to george’s overall role in the series. if you ask me, he’s like the character in the series who’s always serious but if my hunch is correct, his love troubles are getting the best of him in this song. well, i could only speculate until someone releases the translation. by then i may reconsider whatever i slapped in here.

im not sure if this was the song Jessica sang during their culture festival, whatever, the moment i heard this song i can’t help but play those code geass MADs inside my head (the nippon~pon banzai!). this may be fitting of jessica’s character as being energetic but i can’t imagine her being too energetic. still, i kinda find this song addictive! hearing this a couple of times makes me want to create a miku version of this song in Project Diva… sadly, laziness takes a winning streak inside me.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN MARIA
by Yui Horie
CREEPY!!! the intro was creepy as fuck! but it gets cuter once the lyrics pops in and it also had some of maria’s signature crazy laugh and u~ though i admit that i wasn’t expecting maria to sing something this cute. another unexpected character single as hearing this one kinda warms the heart. i was honestly expecting her to sing something spooky all throughout about the murders in rokkenjima but this definitely blew me away. another notable good song.
all in all, i’ll be sticking my nose for the next releases. let’s see what surprises are in store up next. i wonder if they’ll be giving the stakes and the pendragon siesta army some chara songs (crosses fingers) >_< .
